Drum Theatre is situated in the heart of Dandenong and is a short walk from the Dandenong train station and the Langhorne Place bus terminal. The building is a landmark with its combination of the restored elegance of the 1890 building with striking, contemporary architecture. The entire 521 seat auditorium, stage and fly tower is encompassed in a rich, red oval drum.

The theatre is available for hire to schools, dance groups, community groups and performance companies. It also offers an entertaining and challenging program of high quality performances for South East Melbourne to enjoy

Theatre Hire

When hiring the Drum Theatre, your venue hire costs will be determined by your requirements. If you would like more information on hiring the auditorium please fill in our Venue Hire Form and email it to or call 8571 1666 to discuss. An estimated quote will be provided based on information received in the Venue Hire Form.

Hirer Inclusions

When hiring Drum Theatre, your hiring charges include standard theatre lighting and audio, use of ground floor dressing rooms, power, air conditioning, standard cleaning, foyer use for merchandise and programs (charges may apply to merchandise sales).

Staffing, ticketing and marketing support will incur additional charges. Theatre hirers also have exclusive access to Drum Theatre contemporary and light-filled Paul Streefkerk Rehearsal Room and the Green Room backstage.

The Green Room is equipped with filtered water, on-demand boiling water, microwave, dishwasher and tea and coffee making facilities. There are four dressing rooms on the basement level below the stage. Each is equipped with toilets and showers, costume racks, hot and cold water and program speakers.

Ticketing for Theatre Hirers

Drum Theatre provides a range of ticketing services to clients. A full ticketing service can be supplied by Drum Theatre Box Office.

Technical Specifications

Drum Theatre is a fully resourced proscenium arch theatre, with flat stage and an orchestra pit with removable seating. Our theatre boasts audience seating over two levels – stalls and dress circle.

Drum Theatre Building Illumination Opportunities

The Drum Theatre's historic façade features stunning external lighting that provides a unique opportunity to display a variety of colours to reflect significant events or matters of public importance.

If you would like to commemorate a special event or matter through Drum Theatre’s building illumination, please submit your request here. All requests will be assessed by the City of Greater Dandenong and should be submitted no later than 28 days prior to the requested illumination date.

Please read the following guidelines before filling in the request form:

  1. Eligible requests for consideration would be in honour of significant local and regional events, historic events, and extraordinary events/occurrences of City, State and National or International significance;
  2. Lighting will not be considered for commercial entities or personal occasions;
  3. Requests for illumination to commemorate or honour an individual will not be eligible and would be only permitted by exception;
  4. Any annual events must be applied for and assessed each year; there will not be automatic renewals;
  5. Requests will be responded to on a first-come, first-served basis;
  6. Duration would typically be for a day, lasting up to a week if applicable.
